Introduction to CFP® Certification Program

What is CFP® Certification?

The CFP® designation is a professional certification mark conferred by the Financial Planning Association of Singapore (FPAS), an affiliate of the Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB) who is the international owner of the mark.

It originated in 1972 when the first group of students enrolled for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) course at the College for Financial Planning in the United States. The educational programme that integrates knowledge and practices in different areas of the financial services industry led to the movement known as the financial planning profession and the founding of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) in 1985.

Today a CFP® is synonymous with professionalism and competence and the mark represents the benchmark standard in the field of financial planning. When you become a CFP®, you join a global fraternity of more than 160,000 CFP® professionals spanning 27 countries. This makes the CFP® a truly global mark recognised by regulators, institutions and consumers in many countries. While the context of jurisdiction will determine the application of financial planning, CFP® around the world apply a consistent series of frameworks that support the financial planner professionalism. These universal frameworks are divided into four areas, namely, Competency, Education, Ethics and Practice Standards.

In Singapore, the Financial Planning Association of Singapore (FPAS) is a professional organisation for financial planners and seeks to promote the growth of the financial planning industry in Singapore. As an affiliate of FPSB, FPAS administers the Education, Examination, Ethics and Experience (the 4Es) process of the CFP® certification in Singapore.
